The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster was forty years ago today (assuming I get this posted before midnight Seattle time -- it's 8am Thursday here in Den Haag). So I wrote a song: Keep the Dream Alive. It's on the Challenger tape, which is of course long out of print. I also posted it on Mastodon: "So, forty years ago I wrote a song…" - Indieweb.Social.

I think it's one of my better songs -- I should try to sing it more often.

Theme: Crack Treated Seriously

Summary: Théoden and Denethor hunt the elusive Slash Fairy after she makes them... do things. Over and over. Featuring the horses of Middle Earth, with music by Fountains of Wayne, Celine Dion and Kenny Loggins.

Reccer's Notes: This month's theme is "ideas that are very, very bonkers, but approached with the utmost dedication to making it work within whatever passes for reality in that fandom." Author's dedication is key in this humorous tale of slash spreading like a glorious spready thing in the LOTR world and you'll believe that Denethor and Théoden-King need each other whether they realize it or not. The fairy is merely the mechanism. Just check out the other pairings and revel the night away! I especially liked that femmeslash was included, and also horses.

So I did try to get out of here. My hill is an ice floe but I got up there and the main highway is fine. BUT both counties are still on level 2 snow emergencies. Students are whining about it. I point to Canvas where I left them a message saying if you don't feel safe don't come. I'll put up a recording and you go suffer through that.

Rocket is being the best boy, finally using the damn litter box. Guess it got too cold to go pee outside. (He has only used that box a handful of times in 4 years. Today he walked in and did his business while I'm there like a good boy. He still wants out mind you but then he gets over it.

Another day of failing to clean (I have no energy today) but I made an eye appt, paid my membership dues for my pro organization, bought the work con and the hotel, contacted the steampunk con about their teacher discount, got the hotel for the loveland frogman festival in march (watch me get snowed into Loveland)

I did a bad thing. I took an Amazon prime trial membership because I HAD to spend the gift cards I got last work con and the items I wanted were over 50$ cheaper when I did that. Now to remember to cancel it in march.

What I Just Finished Reading:

A Curious Kind of Magic - I enjoyed this cozy mystery/fantasy thought the flawed main character did get on my nerves some times

Sugar and Vice - it was fairly fun

Sally Ride - I thought this was a YA book it was barely middle grade, more like 5-6th grade (I hate that my library system uses some reading level thing that means nothing to people who aren't parents. It's from the line that Chelsea Clinton started after the whole and yet she persisted dust up and it was nice for what it was.

What I am Currently Reading:

Zombie Day Care and something by Alison Bechdel about being superhuman. Oh joy an exercise memoir. Nearly done.

Luna Park history - it was an amusement park in Pittsburgh around 1910. Mostly interested because it feels like a place to set a story. I mean a lion escaped from it and ate a woman.

What I Plan to Read Next: La Grand Familia and some fantasy sapphic comic where chefs fight monsters...with giant forks. I know I know, the prompt is sapphic comic and this is the only one I haven't read yet at my library (I didn't like their other offerings enough to reread)

I bought a runner of Super Corgi Butts (by DSPIAE) and they're hilariously larger than expected.

white robot model Gundam Astraea looking at a sprue of black corgi butts, some of which have visible balls

They're for paint color testing, to see how a color will look on contours, etc. Plastic spoons are the most popular thing to use for this, but I had a chance for discounted butts and uh, yeah. LOL.

Used my manga TBR boardgame.

I finished 5/6 on my last challenge, a couple were ehh but a couple were great too. Honestly since I'm sick reading manga is the easiest thing besides gaming for me to do right now.

Skill: Choose own prompt once

Roll #1:

A 7, okay, getting the trap tile out of the way;; ...Or not. Another 7, and what's funny it was the opposite dice this team (1-6 vs 6-1). Okay here we go, a ten and the prompt is reincarnation. D.Gray-Man.

Roll #2:

A 6, prompt: reverse harem. Men of the Harem.

Roll #3:

An 8, prompt: mystery element. I guesss I should continue Are You Alice?.

Roll #4:

Another 8, using my skill to choose. Picked 'taboo', Ai no DNA.

Roll #5:

A 5, prompt: featuring a group of friends. Oh yay, Mairimashita! Iruma-kun!

Roll #6:

An 8 and the end. The physical BL manga this time is Picnic (Yamada Yugi). I'm going ahead and reading the prequel too to knock them both out.

Most looking forward to: Mairimashita! Iruma-kun
Least looking forward to: Picnic

Read the BL 30,000 Yen Boyfriend, rated it 6/10.

Read the first volume of the classic BL Haru o Daiteita

Read the BL Amai Jouken and rated it 6/10.

(Re) read the BL NightS, kept the rating at 8/10!

Read chapter 1 of volume 2 of Basara.

For The S-Classes that I Raised, I've decided to go forward with the novel instead. I might do what I'm doing with Trash of the Count's Family and read them both at the same time, once I catch up anyway.

Haven't gone through all of it yet, but it seems focused on developing better communication within a system (in both the mechanical and interpersonal senses) with a sprinkling of personal experience.

Streets of Minneapolis

Jan. 28th, 2026 06:36 pm
[personal profile] cosmolinguist

D sent me the link to Bruce Springsteen's new song "Streets of Minneapolis" about half an hour ago.

Both emails in my inbox since have been about this.

All that D told me about the link he sent me was "Well here's the most Erik thing ever." Apparently my friends agree.

One of them is also in Minneapolis and says ICE is on their block today.

At work this morning, when a colleague said they were off on holiday and worried that they were changing places in the U.S., my manager took the opportunity to tell me that for all that's horrible, Minneapolis and Minnesota are showing the world how to handle a thing like this and I must be proud of them.

And I am. I nearly choked up at that.

But also, I wish they didn't have to be. Normal life hasn't been possible in Minneapolis for months. Fundraisers I've contributed to have sometimes had grim updates about people who've disappeared, either directly to ICE or by having to make the horrible choice to "self-deport" which is another way the fascists are getting what they want.

I have to save reading Margaret Killjoy for when I have tears to spare. Some of them are happy tears, some are accompanied by real laughter and knowing smiles (having to bring the car battery in the house overnight like it's a baby animal!), but so many tears.

The shortest version of what I saw is this: a few thousand federal officers are occupying Minnesota right now. They’re in Minneapolis, St. Paul, the suburbs, and even some of the smaller towns. No one wants them there—I’ve never seen a community half so united as the people of the Twin Cities.

ICE is there to kidnap black and brown people. They’re not subtle about their racism...

In response to this, many vulnerable people have essentially gone into lockdown... The networks that are looking out for them are far and away the largest, most organized, and most successful networks like these I’ve ever seen.

Since abductions happen quickly—often stealing people in two or three minutes—the response needs to be just as fast. And it works because when people hear whistles and car horns, they start looking out. They come out of their houses.

It works because everyone knows what is happening is wrong, and everyone is willing to risk their lives to protect people.

Time after time, ICE has tried to abduct someone, only to be scared off by Minnesotans in pajamas and crocs.

But this spirit of “if your car is broken by the cold, strangers will save you” was presented to me by multiple people as the spirit that animates the resistance to ICE. Some people are trapped in their houses, so other people try their hardest to help them, whether or not they’ve got enough experience, whether or not they’re ready...

This style of organizing works because the overwhelming majority of people in the city are very actively opposed to seeing their neighbors kidnapped. There is no shortage of people willing to yell at ICE.
