What I did today

Today I:

  • woke up late. I, very unusually for me, was so tired when my alarm went off that I set a new one. For some reason, I decided to make it five minutes before my first meeting, my team's usual check-in. So yeah, I did not make that.
  • got dressed and downstairs eventually, triaged email and Teams messages.
  • did my morning chores: open the curtains, empty the dishwasher, make breakfast for me and a pot of tea for the household...
  • got halfway through the dishwasher when my work phon rang. Actually rang, not a Teams call. How odd!
  • remember as the guy starts talking that I agreed to do an interview but forgot to put it in my calendar
  • the interview is with rail industry press rather than my usual audiences of general public or politicians, so I got to drag some of the technical vocabulary out of my brain.
  • had a little cry at lunchtime about Alex Pretti
  • had two absolutely brutal meetings this afternoon, for a total of three hours: more technical stuff. I have looked at so many diagrams of train stations...and there weren't any breaks in that 2-hour meeting!
  • walked Teddy with V, as a nice antidote to all the thinking and trying to decipher engineering diagrams (some of which were labeled by hand).
  • made dinner by chopping all the veg in the fridge that needed using up and roasting it (some wrinkly peppers, half a head of rubbery broccoli, a few carrots I didn't know we had, mushrooms that were best before last week...) into a serviceable dinner
  • helped D do a Tesco order for tomorrow
  • read too much news
  • had a shower
  • went to bed late and now can't sleep

Why this piece is awesome: I'm calling this a Heated Rivalry rec as HR is the reason Connor and Hudson became Olympic Torchbearers. The artist beautifully combines individual reference shots of them, and even makes the hideous uniforms look good!

Ughhhhhh! *hugs to everyone, all of you, so many hugs and then some more*

For those who need it, [personal profile] troyswann linked to her art-blog post Gardening in the Rubble, about continuing normal life while the world is on fire.

Lately, I've been having trouble focusing on written words, so the fic edits are going verrrrry sloooowly. I don't think these are going to count as late [community profile] fandomtrees gifts anymore, but I'd still like to finish them!

I've also been continuing to mess around with art. Current status, for future reference. ) In conclusion: noses are the worst, followed by lips, followed by eyes. Ears are also terrible.

Aaand now my right wrist/base of my thumb is furious at me, owww, because of course I chose a new hobby that involved a ton of detailed/controlled handwork. Should've taken up singing instead. *poutsigh*

This is the bare bones of a post bc I’m not feeling up to much today.

Challenge #12

Make an appreciation post to those who enhance your fandom life. Appreciate them in bullet points, prose, poetry, a moodboard, a song... whatever moves you!

Challenge #13

TALK ABOUT A COMMUNITY SPACE YOU LIKE. It doesn’t need to be your favorite, or the one where you spend the most time (although it certainly can be). Maybe it’s even one that you’ve barely visited. But talk about that space and how it helps support fannish community.

Is the #Batfamily Crack tag on tumblr a community? I mean we riff off one another enough to possibly qualify?

Greetings once again from the snowy north! We had a big storm roll through and drop a bunch of snow on us. It's quite wintery out there! We're expecting Arctic cold this week (literally, it's coming from the Arctic :-), so that ought to be interesting. For all that my region of New York State has been infamous for snow events and bad winter weather, the weather we've been getting for many years now is much less predictable than what we used to experience, and that's probably because Lake Erie gets and stays warmer than it used to, such that we have more wide open water for storms to pick up and dump on us as snow. (Note: The most recent storm was, refreshingly, not a lake effect event at all.) The Arctic cold we've had and will be having should take care of that, at any rate. Silver linings.

At any rate, there has been very little walking outdoors. The good news with proctoring exams (BORING) is that I get to pace up and down the aisles, so I got plenty of steps on proctoring days. The rest of the time, I made sure to use the elliptical, a purchase I am still so grateful I took the chance on a few years ago. I've certainly gotten my money's worth out of it!

So, as usual, please share how your fitness efforts have gone for the past week and any changes you're envisioning to your goals for the week ahead.

My Week in Review )

I'm sending you lots of chill vibes (ha!) for the week ahead, friends!

Here's another Goes Wrong fic that grew out of a fill for the [community profile] threesentenceficathon! All the fanfiction I've been writing has pushed Robert Grove from the fifth-most-tagged Goes Wrong Show character on AO3 up to third place, and I am drunk with power.

I think I might have accidentally written something cute. I promise this wasn't my intention.

Title: Gone Astray
Fandom: The Goes Wrong Show
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Robert/Chris
Wordcount: 3,000
Summary: After The Spirit of Christmas, someone has to get Robert home safely, and the role falls to an unwilling Chris.

More current events talk: this is stuff that I consider hopeful, soul-nourishing, action-oriented stuff, but I'll still put it under a cut in case anyone needs to avoid it.

TALK ABOUT A COMMUNITY SPACE YOU LIKE. It doesn’t need to be your favorite, or the one where you spend the most time (although it certainly can be). Maybe it’s even one that you’ve barely visited. But talk about that space and how it helps support fannish community.

Right now I want to talk about my school's manga club. It was founded by the school librarian at the time, and I was immediately here. Since then, we had a lot of other school librarians, most of them not interested in manga club, so I was the one to make it work!

It's cool to communicate with high school kids about the new things. They really made me discover a lot of things, and even when I didn't like it in the end, I knew it existed! Actually, I was reading far less manga before the club existed, and it made me discover a lot of new things, be it by rec or by the reading club we organize.

It's also very cool to see them being part of the fandom, how creative they can be. We don't talk about fanfic that much, to be fair. They absolutely can't have my AO3, and I absolutely can't have their wattpad. But some of them make really good art, some of them moderate forums or time fansub subtitles. Every time I see people complain about minors in fandom, I'm like, no! They're actually cool! You can have your own places just for adults, but in fandom at large, they contribute more than you know!

And then the fave idea kids had, that became a tradition: Test of courage! Stay in the high school after sunset (it has to be in December, otherwise the club ends before sunset), going in the dark places, then come back to the school library and tell horror stories about it. :D
